About This Whisky

Cask Le Sens #6 Smögen 2013 12 years old

Description

As a distinguished cask broker specializing in premium whiskies and rums for independent bottlers and whisky enthusiasts, Cask Le Sens curates exceptional releases featuring rare and aged expressions.

In celebration of the Year of Horse, our sixth release joins forces with Hong Kong's Casky and Macau’s The Antelope to present a rare masterpiece from Sweden’s renowned Smögen Distillery.

The label draws inspiration from the "Dala Horse" (Dalahäst), Sweden’s most cherished cultural icon. Originating from the Dalarna region over four centuries ago, these hand-carved horses symbolize strength, wisdom, and good fortune. For this release, we have featured ten vibrant, painted Dala horses—not only to reflect the colorful joy of the New Year but to offer a blessing of "perfection and completeness" (Shi Quan Shi Mei) to every connoisseur for the year ahead.

Nestled in the small fishing village of Hunnebostrand on Sweden’s west coast, Smögen Distillery was founded in 2010 by Pär Caldenby. Pär leads a fascinating "slash" career: he is a visionary distillery owner and master distiller, yet remains a practicing lawyer. Even as Smögen has risen to international acclaim, Pär maintains his unique rhythm—spending three days a week as a peat artisan and the remainder in the legal profession. This rare blend of legal precision and whisky obsession results in exceptionally small-batch productions that are highly coveted by collectors worldwide as a benchmark for New World heavy peat.

This "Lunar New Year Dala Horse" expression is crafted from the classic Optic barley—a variety that reached its peak in the mid-2000s before being largely succeeded by Concerto, and is now rarely used in the industry.

Peated to a robust 50ppm, the spirit underwent a full 12-year maturation in 1st Fill PX Sherry casks. Its journey began with 10 years in a PX Butt; however, due to a detected leak, Pär made the executive decision to transfer the spirit into a PX Hogshead for its final two years. This "accidental" variation in the maturation process resulted in an even more robust structure and astonishing complexity.

As one of the oldest Smögen independent bottlings currently available on the market, this release is a masterful marriage of Nordic craftsmanship and Spanish Sherry culture.
